Virgo Full Moon – Disciplined Revolution

It’s almost the Full Moon — can you feel it? The moon will be officially full, Tuesday, March 10 at 10:38pm EST although it’s influence will continue to be felt over the next couple of weeks until the New Moon. While meditating upon the energy of the moon, I imagined this scenario:

A teenager who has been “grounded” or put on “restriction,” lured by the glamour of what the night could bring — jumping out the window to escape, defying the rules.

You might feel like that teenager right now, feeling the tension of opposites that the full moon always brings. Something is stopping you, forcing you to go over the details, making you deal with practical matters — your “Old Man.” However, in this case it’s not so easy to just “jump out the window” and run away from responsibility. Getting immersed in the routine of running your everyday life feels safe — a way to keep busy, to stave off fears and fantasies about what the future may bring.

Virgo’s symbol is the Hermit, an old man who’s seen it all. He reached the top of that mountain and a ripe old age by practicing self-discipline and discrimination about how he used his resources – the earth, his body, and time. Being “grounded” is being forced to do with less. With less to think about or deal with, focus is achieved and amazing things can come from seemingly nothing. Discovering hidden gold at your feet, you could find uses for stuff, skills, and talents previously overlooked.

But what about the nervy need to just throw it all out the window come what may? Attempting to keep things safe, sane, and predictable is exhausting. It can feel as though there’s so much work and so little progress is being made. Enough of being stuck in the mud! Even though the future seems at times scary, it’s also exciting. Bring on the new and untried. With the world in such a state of emergency, the time the Hermit (Virgo) needs to get to the top of the mountain is a luxury. We need something radical to heal ourselves and each other NOW! This is the voice of the anxious teenager who hasn’t completely let go of the childish(?) belief that miracles can happen.

The challenge of every full moon is to acknowledge opposing voices of the inner dialogue (your own “old man” and teenager) and work with each side constructively to resolve the tug-of-war. The old man by himself is just a dried-up, dead fossil. In order to make his perfect world livable and enjoyable, he needs the teenager to supply the juice — feelings, compassion, creativity, and un-jaded dreaming facility. The teenager without the old man’s direction could well run off into the night, creating a beautiful utopia (or a twisted nightmare) with little staying power.

Take time at this intense full moon to listen to both sides of your own personal dialogue. Recognize each longing has it’s wisdom and folly. Reconciling the best of your own opposing sides is the way to create peace in your personal life and peace on earth.

Order and structure are the roots and stem of anything you are trying to grow right now. Compassion, love, and creativity are the water that nourishes your what you have imagined into being. At this Virgo full moon, you have a chance to combine the power of these opposing qualities to manifest your desire. Feed your dreams by enjoying the process of diligently working towards them and fertilize by positively envisioning the outcome. Rest easy in the fact that one day soon your efforts will produce something that can benefit you as well as the earth and others.
